Zena Byrd is a Hawaiʻi-born and raised artist who works with nature as the focus of her inspiration. Her deep connection to the land is the spring from which her inspiration bubbles. As a multi-media artist, her work includes but is not limited to ceramic art, plant-dyed fiber arts, and botanically derived watercolor paintings.

Recent works feature the synthesis of these three mediums. Her watercolor works are created with pigments made from the plants and minerals collected and grown by the artist. Each color holds the spirit of the land, a luster unknown, the subsequent texture of the paint a mystery until the pigment sets and dries.

The artist is a farmer by trade and leans deeply into the art of living. She loves to challenge the bounds of what is considered art. As a craftswoman, she is fascinated by the value of craft in comparison to fine art — how a piece that meets utility often loses value in the eyes of the art world. Her goal is to change this narrative.
